Large Fertilizer Tank Permits

If you have a large fertilizer storage tank with a capacity of 100,000 gallons or more you should be aware that the new API 653 tank inspection standards are resulting in some tanks be de-rated to a new, lower fill level.   If your large tank is up for a permit renewal, you will have to demonstrate a process or system to ensure that you do not fill the tanks above the new fill level.  IFCA staff and several IFCA members met with the IL Dept of Ag during the MAGIE show to discuss possible methods to demonstrate compliance regarding overfill protection.  This may include a mechanical alarm system or other suitable means to alert you when the tank nears the approved fill level and shuts down the system when the fill level is reached.  Please consult with your large tank contractor/specialist, contact IDA at 217.785.2427 or contact Jean Payne if you have questions about this.  Don't wait until the last minute to start working on your permit renewal.  We are working with IDA on reasonable methods to protect against overfilling, and hopefully can get these methods approved prior to the upcoming fill season.
