Safe Operation of Equipment on the Road
Over the last couple of weeks there have been a couple incidents related to applicator/vehicle incidents on the roadway. In one incident, the vehicle driver was not aware the applicator was making a left-hand turn, even though the applicator had signaled his turn. According to statistics from the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health, 70% of crashes occur in rural areas, while 30% of crashes occur in urban areas. For additional information on staying safe on the roadway, the publication from Purdue Extension titled “Keep the Spray Rig on the Road & Out of Trouble” is a good resource. The applicator training course mentioned in the previous article also spends a substantial amount of time focusing on safe equipment operation on the road including over rail crossings, near utility poles, watching out for other drivers, navigating bridges and field entrances, etc.
