IFCA 2026 Spring Fertilizer Webinar - Dr. John Jones

IFCA recently hosted a webinar with Dr. John Jones, Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Soil Fertility Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois, to discuss key considerations for spring fertilizer planning for the 2026 growing season. During the presentation, Dr. Jones reviewed current soil conditions across Illinois and how early-season weather and soil temperatures may influence preplant fertilizer application timing.

Dr. Jones also highlighted recent University of Illinois research on nitrogen management, including updated Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN) rate guidelines and the use of economic return analyses to guide nitrogen rate decisions. Additional topics included ongoing work to update Illinois soil-test phosphorus and potassium calibration guidelines, research evaluating sulfur deficiencies in corn and soybean systems, and how soil testing can help identify fields most likely to respond to nutrient applications.

IFCA appreciates Dr. Jones sharing the latest University of Illinois research and practical insights to help inform nutrient management decisions for the 2026 crop year.
