Department of Interior Adds Phosphate and Potash to Final Critical Minerals List

IFCA received notice that both phosphate and potash were added the U.S. Geological Survey’s newly released Final List of Critical Minerals. This is a huge win for the fertilizer industry that has worked on this issue over a handful of years. Both phosphate and potash are essential to U.S. food and national security. Including these minerals on the Critical Minerals List provides a clearer policy framework that can help support domestic production, reduce volatility, and improve long-term access for the farmers who feed America.

The final 2025 list also includes boron, copper, lead, rhenium, silicon, silver and uranium. Maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey, the list was created with input from the Agriculture, Defense and Energy departments.

Projects that mine, produce or recycle minerals on the list can qualify for tax credits under laws including the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law, consideration for Energy Department loans and grants, and streamlined permitting through the FAST-41 program established by a 2015 law.
