Changes To FMCSA’s National Registry Process for Medical Certificates
Effective June 30, the Illinois Secretary of State began participating in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry Initiative for processing a driver’s medical certificate.
Now, when a driver goes to their certified medical examiner (CME) for a physical, the CME will enter the results of the exam directly to FMCSA. The ILSOS will collect that information daily and update the appropriate records when queried.
The Secretary of State Office can no longer enter medical certificate information at the facility level. It is now the responsibility of the CME to enter the results of the examination of the driver. If information is missing or incorrect, the driver will need to contract the CME to re-enter or make changes.
When a driver applies for their initial Commercial Learners Pemit (CLP) or first CDL, they may be required to self-certify as something other than Non-Excepted Interstate (NI). Once the driver receives their CLP or has an Illinois record established, they will be able to change their certification anytime at a CDL facility.
