Tariff Talk This Week in DC
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett revealed that the U.S. has received “more than 10” substantial trade offers from foreign governments seeking new agreements with Washington. After the announcement of a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, Hassett and other administration officials stated that 130 countries are now actively negotiating potential trade deals or tariff arrangements with the United States. The administration is now weighing whether to finalize deals individually or announce them as a comprehensive package, according to Hassett. The U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) office and the Commerce Department are currently reviewing the details of each offer for economic and strategic viability. Media reports signal the Trump administration is initially focusing on potential trade agreements with Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
The United Kingdom suspended its tariffs until mid-2027 on almost 90 products, including pine nuts, spices, raisins and fruit juice. Many news outlets are reporting that Vietnam is prepared to crack down on Chinese goods being shipped to the United States via its territory and will tighten controls on sensitive exports to China. The offer came as senior U.S. officials, including the influential White House trade advisor Peter Navarro, raised concerns about Chinese goods being sent to America with “Made in Vietnam” labels that draw lower duties
President Trump said on Truth Social this week that his administration will “protect” U.S. farmers if China reduces imports of U.S. agricultural product: “Our farmers are GREAT, but because of their GREATNESS, they are always put on the Front Line with our adversaries, such as China, whenever there is a Trade negotiation or, in this case, a Trade War ... The USA will PROTECT OUR FARMERS!!!”
