Recently Published Paper on NREC Study Looking at Diverse Rotation

IFCA has been working closely with University of Illinois researchers for over a decade now, studying many of the practices listed in the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy. One of these projects, A diverse rotation of corn-soybean-winter wheat/double crop soybean with cereal rye after corn reduces tile nitrate loss, measured tile flow and tile nitrate concentrations from 2015 through 2023. This nine-year study, funded by the Illinois Nutrient Research and Education Council, was recently published to Frontiers by Principal Researcher Lowell Gentry. The study demonstrated proof of concept that a more diverse crop rotation can reduce tile nitrate loss from fields to streams, while maintaining crop productivity.
