FMCSA-PHMSA issues safety advisory on Possible Catastrophic Failure of Nurse Tanks and Recommendation for Periodic Testing
On February 20th, 2024, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a safety advisory related to the catastrophic failure of a nurse tank that occurred in Iowa on August 23, 2023. The tank was manufactured by American Welding and Tank LLC at its Freemont, Ohio plant in 2009. The FMCSA-PHMSA advisory focuses on those specific tanks manufactured by American Welding and Tank LLC between January 01, 2007, through December 31, 2011. FMCSA-PHMSA recommends that those tanks within the listed date range undergo a visual, thickness and pressure test. For those tank owners that are unable to conduct a visual, thickness and pressure test, FMCSA-PHMSA recommends either radiographic or ultrasonic testing be conducted.
