Fall Fertilizer Season

The "Keep it for the Crop" (KIC) nutrient stewardship program recommends that fall applied anhydrous ammonia be stabilized to reduce nitrification and protect against nitrate leaching losses.  The 24th edition of the IL Agronomy Handbook also recommends waiting until the daily maximum soil temperature reaches 50 degrees.  You can view the daily maximum temperatures at www.ifca.com, click on "Illinois Soil Temperature."  The map is also color coded like a traffic signal with red for stop, green for go and yellow for caution.  Application of nitrogen in the fall, when in accordance with the recommendations, is considered an enhanced nutrient stewardship practice.  KIC is supported by all of the major ag organizations and is a significant effort on behalf of all sectors of the industry to support enhanced stewardship to protect against lawsuits and regulation of agricultural nutrients.  Thanks to everyone who is doing their best to support enhanced stewardship practices this fall.  Over the years we have made significant progress in the management of fall nitrogen, and IFCA recognizes and communicates that fact to state agencies and other groups.  To see research behind the fall N recommendations and for more details on the KIC program go to www.KIC2025.org.
