CDL Declarations

We've been getting calls from members asking which CDL category they should declare beginning January 30, 2012 and prior to January 2014.  For the majority of our members who are engaged in the supply and delivery of farm supplies, equipment or commodities, the answer is fairly simple.  If you are involved in crossing states lines to conduct commerce as an agricultural supplier, then you should declare category 1 which is Non Excepted Interstate.  Drivers who are required to have a CDL because of your business transportation activities, but who do NOT cross state lines, should declare category 3 which is Non Excepted Intrastate.  Sometime after January 30, 2012 you will need to visit a Secretary of State CDL office to make this declaration in person.  There is a guidance document on this requirement posted on the IFCA homepage.  Terry Montalbano of the Illinois Sec of State Office will be at the IFCA convention on January 17, 2012 to explain this new requirement in detail.  In the meantime, please feel free to contact IFCA with questions.
