Streambank Erosion: An Important sources of P loss

Researchers and industry recently came together at the Agricultural Nutrient Policy Council (ANPC) Nutrient Strategy Workshop in Ohio to share research findings, including findings on the effects of streambank erosion on overall P losses.

The bulk of P loss from the landscape is often attributed to agricultural soils. However, one important and often overlooked nonpoint source of P is streambank erosion.  While some states recognize this as a nonpoint P source (WI, MN, IL, IA, MO), many states do not (AR, IN, KY, LA, MS, OH, TN).

University of Illinois Associate Professor Dr. Andrew Margenot gave an overview of the current findings on streambank erosion, noting that depending on the landscape position and features, streambank erosion can contribute anywhere between 6-93% percent to the total P loss.

This source of P is an important piece of P pollution, and one that should be considered in addition to 4R management for P.
