Mississippi River Flooding Projected to Peak This Week

The Upper Mississippi River levels are rising. As residents along parts of the river are forced to evacuate, others are working to sandbag and keep the flood waters away. USDA is predicting the worst is yet to come, with a top ten flood crest not expected near the Quad Cities for as much as two more weeks.

Rapid melting of snowpack is the culprit of the rapid rise in river levels. According to news reports, river levels near Clinton, Iowa reached a low of 8.9 feet on January 2, 2022. Those levels are expected to hit 20.6 feet this week, which is above flood stage.

Lock and Dam 15, spanning Rock Island, Illinois, to Davenport, Iowa, shows an expected flood crest near 21.6 feet, which is 6.6 feet above flood stage, this week.
