Efforts Will Continue on SB 2010

The Illinois legislature has adjourned, leaving Governor Quinn with a decision on a major expansion of gaming as the solution to our state's deepening fiscal crisis.  SB 2010 amending the IL Fertilizer Act to secure and enhance nutrient research programs passed the Senate unanimously but the House leadership would not let the bill advance as they focused on the new legislative district maps and the budget.  IFCA will continue to work to gather additional support for SB 2010 over the summer.  Nutrient research and local water quality programs are critical to ensure that our industry takes the lead on nutrient challenges.  We hope to revive the legislation in the fall Veto Session and will keep working to pass this legislation.  The repeated transfers of fertilizer tonnage taxes that are statutorily dedicated to nutrient research into the state's general fund must end.
