A lot has changed in the field of soil fertility since Dan Schaefer went to work for GROWMARK at Illini FS more than four decades ago.
 
Back then, it was not uncommon for farmers to add an extra 20 to 40 pounds of anhydrous ammonia in the fall to make up for potential losses before the crop needed it in the spring.
