Harmful Legislation to Change FIFRA Introduced in the US Senate

Late last week Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a bill in Congress (S. 3283) to amend The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) – see link to bill here.  This bill was previously introduced in the last Congress by Senator Udall (D-NM) and Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO).

The legislation would gut decades of federal regulations and scientific progress and undermine EPA.  The bill would jeopardize the continued availability and innovation of pesticide products by imposing an unscientific and unbalanced process that could unnecessarily remove pesticide options from those who use them.

IFCA is working with CropLife America (CLA) and Responsible Industry for Sound Environment (RISE) regarding this very harmful legislation.  CLA and RISE put out this joint statement regarding S. 3283 this week:

“Pesticides play an important role in protecting public health, improving the sustainability of our food supply, and mitigating climate change. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act is the global gold standard in the regulation of pesticides because it establishes a rigorous scientific foundation to balance the risks and benefits of every pesticide on the market today. Legislation seeking to ban individual chemistries and politicize the regulatory process undermines both the work of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s career scientists and a long-standing law that serves our nation well.”

IFCA will continue to monitor this bill and will make our members aware of any updates.  IFCA has reached out to Senator Durbin and Senator Duckworth and the rest of the Illinois congressional delegation on how harmful this legislation is to the ag input industry.
