IFCA Working Capitol Hill on Passing Infrastructure Legislation and Opposing a Methane Fee

Recently, Kevin Johnson was in Washington D.C. visiting with members of congress trying to garner supports for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This bipartisan legislation represents an opportunity to provide meaningful economic and quality of life enhancements to communities across the country and to build for the future.

The investments made in the Senate package would facilitate long overdue repairs and improvements to our roads, bridges, rail, and public transportation systems, as well as investing in airports, ports, broadband, and water systems. IFCA encourages all members of congress to support the legislation. The bipartisan bill would have far-reaching benefits. The investments would create new jobs through project construction in the short and long term.

IFCA also worked members of congress on a provision on the “Build Back Better Act”.  The provision would impose a tax of $1500 per ton/CO2e on methane emissions from oil and natural gas facilities.  While IFCA recognizes the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, methane emissions are already being addressed via regulations at the federal and state level.  IFCA also foresees additional federal regulations to reduce methane emissions are in the coming months.

Based on a recent analysis by Resources for the Future which examined the impacts of a methane fee on natural gas prices, The Fertilizer Institute estimates that the proposed fee would lead to an increase of $59 million - $103 million in annual natural gas costs for ammonia production.

If any new details emerge on these issues, IFCA will let our membership know.
