Lock and Dam Work Stops Barge Traffic on Illinois River
The work has been planned for years and area agricultural experts say the effect on farmers should be minimal.
Still, the idea that the Peoria Lock Dam and indeed, the Illinois River waterway, is closed to barge traffic for a four-month repair job, is a major development and change.
“It is going to cost more money, but they (farmers) have been aware that this is coming,” said Patrick Kirchhofer of the Peoria County Farm Bureau.
But pleasure boaters, don’t worry. You can still hang out in the Peoria Lakes upstream of the lock to fish and boat around. Passage through the lock, however, is not possible, so to go downriver, one must get out of the water and drive around to the next pool below the lock.
