Madigan's inner circle had ties to ComEd, emails show

A top aide to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan inquired about jobs for political insiders at Commonwealth Edison, the state-regulated electric company under federal investigation for its hiring activities and lobbying influence, according to a report.

Emails obtained by WBEZ show that former Madigan Chief of Staff Tim Mapes had a direct line of communication with those doing the hiring at ComEd.

Mike McClain, who was a lobbyist for ComEd and parent company Exelon, forwarded Mapes an email in 2015 confirming the hire of an ex-Madigan staffer, WBEZ reported.

In another instance, this time in 2013, Mapes had asked McClain to check on the application status of a former House Democratic staffer who had interviewed at ComEd and asked Mapes for help, according to WBEZ. McClain responded saying the female staffer had a "good interview" and offered to forward the woman's question to the ComEd executive in charge of hiring. It's unclear if the woman was offered the position.
