Road work, other projects planned for Illinois State Fair

About $500,000 of road improvements is wrapping up on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, the first phase of millions of dollars of improvements that will be undertaken on the fairgrounds in the coming months

In addition to more road resurfacing, the fair will be starting the next round of improvements to the Coliseum, as well as take on long-deferred maintenance on other fair structures.

Weather permitting, Phase I of the road projects will be finished by Thanksgiving. The $500,000 project calls for resurfacing roads starting at the Eighth Street intersection with Sangamon Avenue and continuing north to the sheep barn. The resurfacing will include 4-H Lane from Eighth Street west along the Junior Livestock and Orr buildings to Gate 9 on the west side of the grounds.

In a statement, Department of Agriculture Director John Sullivan said that “over the years the heavy traffic volume and the weight of trucks and trailers delivering livestock have worn out these roads.”
