In a letter sent to Democratic leaders in Congress on Wednesday, President Trump urged lawmakers to approve the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement before taking up infrastructure legislation.

 

In the letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) President Donald Trump wrote: “Before we get to infrastructure, it is my strong view that Congress should first pass the important and popular USMCA trade deal. Once Congress has passed USMCA, we should turn our attention to a bipartisan infrastructure package.”

 

Pelosi and Schumer were scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Wednesday to discuss funding for an infrastructure plan. The meeting was abruptly called off after Pelosi told reporters earlier in the morning that the President was “engaged in a cover-up.” Meanwhile U.S. trade Representative Robert Lighthizer continues to work out USMCA issues with Pelosi.

 

"[Lighthizer is] still negotiating with Speaker Pelosi and he thinks there is a sincere interest in the House on trying to get this done, and so hopefully they can find a way to get it passed by the House," said Senate Majority Whip John Thune.
