Raising state’s minimum wage to $15 now up to Rauner
The Illinois Senate late Wednesday OK’d legislation that would gradually raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. Already passed by the House, the bill goes to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk.
The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 30-23.
Sponsored by Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, Senate Bill 81 would raise the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $15 an hour by 2022.
Businesses with 50 or fewer employees would get a tax credit to help them adapt to the higher wages.
After passing the House Tuesday, Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, put the bill on hold. He withdrew the motion Wednesday, allowing the Senate to vote on it.
