Nutrient reduction options tested, Trials confirm strategy’s recommendations

The Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy features options for farmers to weigh as they work toward reducing nutrient loss. However, how effective are they?

 

Lowell Gentry, University of Illinois principal research specialist in agriculture, is in the second year of research focusing on a combination of cover crops and woodchip bioreactors, both of which are frequently mentioned in the strategy.

 

The findings? They work.

 

“In general, combining cover crops and a bioreactor can just about take care of our nitrate load,” Gentry said.
