Senate adopts leadership term limits

You might call it a sign that Illinois Senate leaders from both parties are serious about an effort to finally reach a deal on the state budget.

 

You also might call it a shot, if an unspoken one, across the bow of House Speaker Mike Madigan.

 

Whatever you call it, the Senate sure raised some eyebrows late yesterday when it voted 58-0 to limit its leaders to a maximum of 10 years in those slots.

 

Senate President John Cullerton didn't specifically address why he and GOP Leader Christine Radogno pushed the resolution. But such limits have drawn strong backing from Gov. Bruce Rauner and strong opposition from Madigan, and were part of the bigger budget compromise that the senators offered earlier this week.
