Proposed millionaire tax amendment fails in Illinois House
The Illinois House fell short Wednesday of approving a proposed constitutional amendment to impose a surtax on incomes above $1 million.
The proposed amendment, sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, got 68 “yes” votes in the House, but it needed 71 to pass.
Immediately after the vote, Madigan issued a statement blaming House Republicans for the measure’s failure. No Republicans voted in favor of it.
“For the second time in less than a year, Republican legislators have rejected the wishes of their constituents and opposed a measure requiring the top 1 percent to pay more to help boost education funding in Illinois,” Madigan said. “An advisory question on this matter was put to voters in the 2014 general election and it received over 60 percent support statewide. Unfortunately today, Republicans again failed to listen to their constituents.”
