Vilsack seeks GMO label solution

Tom Vilsack believes the use of so-called “smart labels” could have a role in striking a compromise in food labeling initiatives covering everything from organics to foods containing genetically engineered crops.
 
The U.S. secretary of agriculture said at a press conference here farmers and others in the food delivery chain must embrace consumer demand. But, he added, common sense must prevail.
 
“There’s a great lesson for agriculture,” said Vilsack, speaking at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on the campus of Southern Illinois University. “It’s great to have new technology and to make the case to producers, but you have to remember you have to give the consumers what they want.”
