After incident, authorities caution farmers on fertilizing

While not a common occurrence, authorities stress safety to farmers and the public when anhydrous ammonia leaks happen, like the one that took place in Windsor last week.

Emergency personnel responded to an anhydrous ammonia leak which had trapped a farmer at 4:08 p.m. Nov. 10 in a field at 2600 E 1900 N Road. The main supply line connected to a tool bar had broken off, and liquid anhydrous sprayed from the back of a tractor, creating a cloud of anhydrous ammonia around the farmer’s tractor, authorities said.

The field was surrounded by trees and there was very little wind, creating a potentially lethal situation for the farmer, Windsor authorities said.
