Illinois independent map effort tops 400,000 signatures
A coalition attempting to take the task of drawing the state's political maps out of the hands of politicians is more than two-thirds of the way toward its goal of collecting 600,000 signatures to get the proposal on the ballot.
In an announcement Monday, the nonpartisan Independent Maps coalition said more than 400,000 Illinoisans have signed petitions for a state constitutional amendment to create a special commission responsible for drawing state legislative districts.
In all, the group has collected 402,109 signatures of its goal of 600,000 signatures for placement on the 2016 general election ballot.
