This Week in Springfield
Lawmakers are in the final week of the Spring Session of the Illinois General Assembly. The May 31 deadline is fast approaching with few agreements on the 'big issues' have yet to be worked out.
The last few weeks saw a lot of political grandstanding by both parties on many business issues including tort reform, workers' comp reform and 'right to work' legislation. Speaker Madigan and Senate President Cullerton are still shying way at many of Governor Bruce Rauner's issues that he campaigned on. In addition, negotiations on budgetary issues are moving slowly as legislators must developed a 'doomsday' budget - this in light of a Supreme Court ruling last week that scrapped previous attempts at reforming public employee pensions.
A lack of agreement on many of these issues is sure to have legislators back in Springfield over the summer months.
