Two Years after West Blast, Texas Legislature Weighs New Regulations
Two years after a fire and explosion at a West fertilizer plant killed 15 people and injured more than 300, House lawmakers Tuesday took up bills that would address regulatory breakdowns that contributed to the accident.
Backers hope the legislation could prevent future deaths. But they remain wary of chances for approval from a Legislature reluctant to impose greater regulations on businesses.
Investigations pointed to a lax and disjointed regulatory system at all levels. Lack of coordination between agencies and opaque disclosure policies were issues cited.
