FMCSA Delays Speed Limiter Proposal to 2025
Faced with continued pressure from Congress, the Federal Motor Carier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has again delayed a proposal to mandate speed limiters on commercial vehicles. Two bills had been introduced to prohibit FMCSA from moving forward with their often-discussed plan, and preliminary language for the federal FY 2025 budget included language to strip any funding to FMCSA for work on speed limiters. A federal notice published last week said the proposal will not be considered until 2025.
The speed limiter proposal has been bounced around since 2016 with no action. It appears FMCSA wants to set the maximum speed at 68 MPH for trucks. But there is plenty of opposition from some within the industry. Illinois implemented a uniform 70 MPH speed limit in 2010.
